What +1 means
+1 is the country calling code for Canada. The same code is written 001 when you dial out from most of Europe, Africa and Asia, and 011 1 from the US and Canada. All three reach the same place: only the exit code in front of it changes. Whichever one you use, the national trunk 1 is dropped once the country code is in front.

Canada and the US share one numbering plan
Both countries use +1 and draw from the same pool of area codes, so the country code tells you nothing about which of the two a number belongs to — only the area code does. And as in the US, mobile and landline come out of the same ranges, so the digits cannot tell you which you are calling.
