What +61 means

+61 is the country calling code for Australia. The same code is written 0061 when you dial out from most of Europe, Africa and Asia, and 011 61 from the US and Canada. All three reach the same place: only the exit code in front of it changes. Whichever one you use, the national trunk 0 is dropped once the country code is in front.

Mobile numbers

Mobiles start with 4 (written 04 nationally).

Converting to E.164

Take the number as written locally (0412 345 678), drop the leading 0, then prefix +61. The result is +61412345678: no spaces, no dashes, no parentheses. Store that, and format for display only when you show it to a human.

Why not do it with a regex

A pattern that matches Australia numbers today breaks the moment a new mobile range is allocated, and it cannot tell you whether the number is actually assigned. The tool above runs the same numbering-plan engine as our phone validation API, so it also reports line type and region rather than just shape.

Australia mobile prefixes

04xx
Every Australian mobile — no exceptions
05xx
Reserved / special services, not standard mobile

A prefix tells you the range a number was issued from, not which network holds it today — numbers move between operators. For the current carrier you need a live lookup, which is what our phone API returns.

Australia has four area codes, not forty

The whole country runs on 02, 03, 07 and 08, each covering several states. An 02 number is not a Sydney number — it is a New South Wales or ACT number. Geography beyond that is not in the digits, so a form that promises a caller's city from an Australian landline is guessing.

Questions

Australia phone numbers, answered

How do you write an Australian phone number?

Locally: 0412 345 678 for a mobile, (02) 1234 5678 for a Sydney landline. Internationally: drop the leading 0 and add +61, so those become +61412345678 and +61212345678. The bracket-and-space styling is for humans; store the +61 form.

What is a +612 phone number?

It is an Australian landline in New South Wales or the ACT. +61 is Australia, and 2 is the area code that Australians write as 02. So +61 2 1234 5678 and (02) 1234 5678 are the same number written two ways.

Do all Australian mobiles start with 04?

Yes. Every mobile number allocated in Australia sits in the 04 range nationally, which is 4 after the +61 in international form. If a number does not start 04 or +614, it is not an Australian mobile.

How many digits is an Australian phone number?

Nine after the country code. Written nationally it looks like ten because of the leading 0 trunk prefix, which is dropped internationally: 0412 345 678 (10 characters) is +61 412 345 678 (9 digits after +61).
