What +54 means

+54 is the country calling code for Argentina. The same code is written 0054 when you dial out from most of Europe, Africa and Asia, and 011 54 from the US and Canada. All three reach the same place: only the exit code in front of it changes. Whichever one you use, the national trunk 0 is dropped once the country code is in front.

Mobile numbers

Mobiles add a 9 after the country code in international format, and locals write a 15 prefix domestically.

Converting to E.164

Take the number as written locally (011 15-1234-5678), drop the leading 0, then prefix +54. The result is +5491112345678: no spaces, no dashes, no parentheses. Store that, and format for display only when you show it to a human.

Why not do it with a regex

A pattern that matches Argentina numbers today breaks the moment a new mobile range is allocated, and it cannot tell you whether the number is actually assigned. The tool above runs the same numbering-plan engine as our phone validation API, so it also reports line type and region rather than just shape.

The 9 and the 15 are the same thing in different places

An Argentine mobile is written +54 9 11 1234-5678 internationally but 011 15-1234-5678 at home. The 9 after the country code and the 15 after the area code both mean 'this is a mobile' — and you use exactly one of them, never both and never neither. Numbers stored with the 15 still in place fail internationally, which is the most common Argentine data problem there is.

Questions

Argentina phone numbers, answered

How do I write an Argentine mobile number internationally?

Take the domestic form 011 15-1234-5678, drop the leading 0 and the 15, then put +54 9 in front of the area code: +5491112345678. The 15 is domestic shorthand; the 9 is its international equivalent.

Why does my Argentine number not work from abroad?

Almost always because the 15 was kept. A number stored as +54 11 15 1234 5678 is not dialable — the 15 has to be removed and a 9 inserted after the 54.

That is how a Argentina number is written. Whether a whole list is worth dialling is the free call list cleaner, or check one number on the spam phone checker.
