What +852 means

+852 is the country calling code for Hong Kong. The same code is written 00852 when you dial out from most of Europe, Africa and Asia, and 011 852 from the US and Canada. All three reach the same place: only the exit code in front of it changes. Hong Kong uses no trunk prefix, so the national number follows the code unchanged.

Mobile numbers

No trunk prefix or area codes. Mobiles most commonly start with 5, 6 or 9.

Converting to E.164

Take the number as written locally (5123 4567), add the +852 prefix (there is no trunk digit to remove). The result is +85251234567: no spaces, no dashes, no parentheses. Store that, and format for display only when you show it to a human.

Why not do it with a regex

A pattern that matches Hong Kong numbers today breaks the moment a new mobile range is allocated, and it cannot tell you whether the number is actually assigned. The tool above runs the same numbering-plan engine as our phone validation API, so it also reports line type and region rather than just shape.

Hong Kong mobile prefixes

Mobile
6xxx
Mobile
9xxx

4xxx
Mobile (newer allocations)

A prefix tells you the range a number was issued from, not which network holds it today — numbers move between operators. For the current carrier you need a live lookup, which is what our phone API returns.

Hong Kong has no area codes and no trunk prefix

Every number is eight digits, full stop. There is no leading 0 to drop and nothing in the first digits that names a district. A form that asks for a Hong Kong area code is wrong; a form that strips a leading 0 will destroy the number. Mobiles most often start 5, 6 or 9, and some newer blocks start 4.

Questions

Hong Kong phone numbers, answered

What country is +852?

+852 is Hong Kong. Written 00852 from most of the world and 011 852 from the US and Canada. There is no trunk prefix: 5123 4567 locally is +85251234567 internationally, digits unchanged.

How many digits is a Hong Kong phone number?

Eight. Always. After +852 you write the same eight digits a local would dial. Any other length is not a Hong Kong number.

Are there area codes in Hong Kong?

No. The territory is a single numbering plan of eight-digit numbers. If a form asks you for a Hong Kong area code, the form is wrong.

That is how a Hong Kong number is written. Whether a whole list is worth dialling is the free call list cleaner, or check one number on the spam phone checker.
